The Overlook
Historic Building at Philadelphia Pike
and Commonwealth Avenue, Claymont, Delaware
Located at the main entrance to Overlook Colony stands a grand building with a rich history. It has seen many changes since 1917 when first constructed by General Chemical Company. Overlook Colony was planned & developed by General Chemical to house the managers, employees & their families in very nice homes in a village-like community. Initially, the two-story building with full basement was used as the Community Center. Later it was known as Redman’s Hall; a regular meeting place for a fraternal group celebrating the Lenni Lenape Indians who initially settled on the land. Through the years the building was used in many ways such as, services & activities for Holy Rosary Church; wedding receptions; public meetings (a notable one started the volunteer Claymont Fire Company); the showing of “Moving Pictures”; stores such as Shinns, Steins, Hersheys; & many other uses. Up until 1924, General Chemical Company offered several rooms in the building to take care of the educational needs of the children in the colony until a permanent school was built down the street.

In 1989, Tom, Edith and their daughter, Dawn Lamb purchased the building, completely modernizing it while maintaining the glory of the building’s former days. Their efforts were recognized by many, including being presented with a New Castle County's Preservation Award in 2000 and receiving a grant of $2,500 from General Chemical in 2002.

Much prayer, work, finances & community involvement have been expended by the Lamb's over the years. Their great commercial tenants, Cathy Imburgia - Creative Communications, Michelle Hopkins - Dress for Success Delaware, and Dawn Lamb - Lamb's Loft, along with the residential tenants have greatly contributed to the success this grand historic structure represents.

During the summer and fall of 2007, Tom and Edith decided that it was time for them to sell their share of the partnership. Dawn is currently in the market to find a new partner in owning The Overlook building and assist in running the business of the property. If you are interested, please contact Dawn.

We hope that you have enjoyed visiting our historic building!
